Violence in Belle Glade devastates the community

Jimmy McMillan, owner of the Alabama Georgia Grocery Store at 748 Martin Luther King Boulevard in Belle Glade, was shot and killed in an attempted robbery at his store early Monday morning.

Police say that a man wearing a mask entered the store around 6:30 a.m. and attempted the robbery.  According to WPTV News Channel 5 reports, soon afterward, Randy Rhames who works with McMillan, found his boss on the ground with a gunshot wound.  McMillan, 49, was flown to Delray Medical Center where he later died.  The shooter is on the loose.

Video footage from the store that morning has been released by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office in an effort to catch the person responsible for this tragedy.  Please click here to see the video.

The Alabama Georgia store has been part of the Belle Glade community for over 50 years, having been passed down through 3 generations of McMillans who have earned great respect for their giving spirit in a community where there is so much poverty.  Jimmy McMillan was also a former champion bass fisherman, acquiring high accolades in the fishing community.  The Belle Glade community is devastated.
