Aggressive drivers beware

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

Next time you are riding along in your car and someone cuts you off or drives a little slower than you wish they would drive, think twice before you start screaming your head off or weaving in and out of traffic to try to cut them off.  I know it’s hard sometimes but take a deep breath and focus on driving safely rather than letting your anger get the best of you, putting your life in danger and possibly hurting others on the road around you.

Christopher Sessoms, 41, of Jacksonville, North Carolina, plead guilty recently to charges related to a deadly road rage crash along Powhite Parkway on September 22 of last year, which resulted in the death of Christopher Lee Fisher, 24.

According to a Richmond Time Dispatch report, Sessoms was driving a pickup truck with his fiancée in the passenger seat after attending a concert at The National in Richmond.  Fisher was driving in the southbound lanes of Interstate 195 from his home on his way to work when, according to witnesses, the Ford pickup sped past Fisher’s Honda at an estimated 90 mph, pulled in front of Fisher and slammed on the brakes. Further, it is reported that the two vehicles took off and engaged in aggressive driving.  During the altercation, Fisher’s car is said to have run out of roadway before hitting a manhole cover, becoming airborne, and rotating through the air before smashing into a concrete bridge abutment.

Upon impact, Fisher suffered severe blunt injuries to his chest and was taken to VCU Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Sessoms’ fiancée, Charity Dees, faces a charge of leaving an accident scene as a passenger. Her preliminary hearing in Richmond traffic court is set for May 21.

Sessoms could be facing up to 20 years in prison; he will be sentenced in July.

Lake Worth’s next electric supplier

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

More than 10 companies have already placed bids to become Lake Worth’s next electric supplier.

Lake Worth Utilities serves 24,100 residential and commercial electric customers in Lake Worth, Palm Springs and parts of unincorporated Palm Beach County.

Those affected are standing by in close attention, hoping for some relief from comparably high bills.

According to a recent Palm Beach Post report, Lake Worth Utilities’ residential customers pay $125.65 for 1,000 kilowatt-hours of power – 33.5 percent more than Florida Power & Light Co. customers, according to the latest report by the Florida Municipal Electric Association.

Also, there are discussions ‘in works’ regarding a $22.6 million plan to continue to improve the electric utility’s distribution system over the next 10 years, including upgrades intended to reduce the size and duration of power failures.

16-year-old suffers severe head injuries in car surfing-related accident

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

16-year-old Hannah Huntoon of Palm Beach Gardens remains hospitalized at St. Mary’s Medical Center; her parents have asked the staff to refrain from releasing any further updates on Hannah’s condition after she fell of her friend’s car while partaking in ‘car surfing‘.

Hannah’s mom was on the news yesterday, speaking out for the first time since the accident, to warn other kids and parents to talk about the dangers involved in car surfing and to let everyone know that her little girl has not opened her eyes since the accident and everyone is suffering greatly because of this incident.

I posted about car surfing a few months back and although I have to admit the topic was fairly new to me then, it seems more prevalent now.  As I mentioned before, I do not at all understand the appeal.  Sure, we all did things in our teenage years to defy our parents… tried a trick on the skate- or surf-board that was a bit challenging, stayed up too late, ate things we should not have eaten, etc. but climbing on top of a moving vehicle traveling at high rates of speed just does not sound fun by any stretch of the imagination.

Huntoon suffered severe head injuries and has had part of her skull removed to relieve pressure on her brain, according to reports.

Anyone thinking about doing this, please consider the likely possibility of injuries as serious as what Hannah Huntoon has suffered, consider the suffering her family is having to endure and further, consider the possibility that you could easily die doing something like this.  Use your common sense and find something else to do for fun!

Beware of what you share on Facebook

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

Did you catch Lesley Stahl’s recent interview of Mark Zuckerberg for 60 minutes?  She asked him about the blatant privacy issues, pending investigations and the fact that they have even had to hire a lobbyist to deal with privacy concerns.  He skirts around the issue and just keeps saying how important it is for them to keep our information safe.

I think it’s safe to say any personal data shared with Facebook, is likely in some way, shared with the world.  Facebook compiles data to pass on to advertisers so they can advertise to each individual based on their likes and preferences.  Sure, there are settings you can adjust to make things less visible to friends, friends-of-friends, and those who do not fit in either of those categories but the truth is if there is something you do not want the world to know, you should just keep it off of Facebook.

Read this recently published article which you may find interesting, regarding Facebook and shared personal data. Parents, make sure to discuss this with your children as well.

Red traffic light means STOP

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

86-year-old Gloria Hart of Lake Worth was a passenger in a 2011 Nissan Murano driven by 68-year-old Robert Hart last Monday afternoon when a 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac driven by 57-year-old Maria Carrion drove through a red traffic signal and side-swiped their vehicle.

According to a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office crash report, Robert Hart was attempting to cross the intersection at eastbound Old Boynton Road when their Nissan was side-swiped on the passenger side.  The report further states, after being side-swiped, the Nissan then left the roadway, side-swiped a cluster of trees, then crashed into another cluster of trees before coming to a complete stop.

The accident occurred at approximately 1:40 p.m.  Robert Hart and Maria Carrion both sustained serious injuries and Gloria Hart later died at Delray Medical Center, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

The traffic accident remains under investigation.

This is yet another example of a tragic traffic accident that could have been avoided by abiding by traffic laws.  Red traffic lights mean STOP!  If you are approaching a yellow light, your safest bet is to slow down and stop before that light turns red while you are running through the intersection and putting lives in danger.
